Carnival Cruise Lines has Opened the First Brewery at Sea

by Jessie Donofrio on Sep 6, 2017 in Beer

The Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines has hopped aboard the microbrewing trend with the founding of RedFrog Brewery, the first ever craft brewery on a cruise ship, according to CraftBeer.com.

RedFrog has just a small three-barrel brewing system on Carnival’s Vista ship, which is captained by head brewer Colin Presby. Though Presby hasn’t brewed at sea before, he does have experience slinging brews at Pennsylvania breweries Weyerbacher and Stoudts

One of the unique things about brewing at sea is the water used in the process. Carnival Cruise Lines have a special desalinization and reverse osmosis system that enables Presby to brew as much beer as he wants with the water that sits right below the ship. He can also experiment with the mineral properties of the water in order to make a tastier batch.

Right, now the steady beers you can expect to find at RedFrog include the Port Hoppin’ IPA, Caribbean Wheat, and a Java Stout. They also have an American Pale Ale frequently on tap and some times “fun” brews like their Miami Guava Wheat.

With the success of the RedFrog Pub on the Vista, Carnival has plans to open more breweries aboard their large fleet of ships. As for Presby, according to CraftBeer.com he’s just happy to be serving up local brew. “If you’re on board for a cruise, it’s as local as it gets,” he said.
