Stay Cozy: 10 Portland Bars with Fireplaces

Portland was blessed with a long summer this year, but winter is swiftly approaching, bringing rain, gray skies and long nights. Luckily, the city hosts a multitude of cozy bars warmed with fireplaces where you can curl up with a toddy and a date to ward off the winter chill. Here are some of our favorite spots; Let us know if we missed yours on our Facebook or Twitter.

Binks: This hotspot in the Alberta Arts district is well loved for its pool table, excellent jukebox, and friendly staff. (2715 NE Alberta St.; 503-493-4430)

Doug Fir Lounge: Just on the east side of the Burnside bridge, the Doug Fir has always been a popular spot for seeing live music, as well as for lounging by its fireplace in the wood cabin-styled upstairs bar. (830 E Burnside St.; 503-231-9663)

Honors Bar (Kennedy School): Part of the greater McMenamins Kennedy School complex, this cigar and whiskey bar doesn’t have a traditional fireplace, but it does have a wood-fired stove to warm you up. (5736 NE 33rd Ave.; 503-249-3983)

Jack Knife: Part of the family of bars that includes Sweet Hereafter, Dig-A-Pony and the Bye & Bye, this downtown destination features an impressive cocktail menu and gorgeous design, with two fireplaces. (614 SW 11th Ave.; 503-384-2347)

Multnomah Whisk{e}y Library: Still relatively new, the Whisk{e}y Library boasts the best whiskey (and whisky) list in the city, as well as an aesthetic resembling your wealthy great-uncle’s private study. If you’re coming in a group, make sure you have a reservation: there’s no standing in this bar. (1124 SW Alder St.; 503-954-1381)

Rookery Bar (Raven & Rose): Upstairs from the Raven & Rose is the Rookery, a beautiful wooden lounge that places an emphasis on expertly crafted cocktails. (1331 SW Broadway 503-222-7673)

Rontoms: This impressively adorned club, complete with an Eames Lounger, is known for its huge covered patio, but inside it keeps guests warm with its fireplace. (600 E Burnside St.; 503-236-4536)

Tonic Lounge: Hang out in the front room of Tonic to enjoy the fireplaces, or head to the back room for local music gigs and live comedy. (3100 NE Sandy Ave.; 503-238-0543)

Sapphire Hotel: A classic Portland lounge at the top of SE Hawthorne, the Sapphire Hotel is still a perfect spot to take a date, with amazing drinks and food, and a casually romantic atmosphere. Eat, drink, kiss indeed. (5008 SE Hawthorne Blvd.; 503-232-6333)

Vault Martini Lounge
: A Pearl classic, Vault is known for its voluminous cocktail menu and classy-chic style. Happy Hour is all day on Sundays, with drink and food specials—a perfect place for a winter afternoon. (226 NW 12th Ave.; 503-224-4909)
