As the rainclouds of the season descend, beer-lovers’ thoughts turn to big, bold ales that can help take the chill off. We can look forward to the 17th annual Holiday Ale Festival, taking over Pioneer Courthouse Square from Wednesday–Sunday, November 28–December 2. More than 50 winter-style brews will be pouring, and each one has either been made especially for the event or is already a limited or rare release. Basically, you’ll find beers here you won’t be able to sip anywhere else.

Clear-topped tents will cover the outdoor event area, which is right on the MAX transit line, and gas heaters will keep everyone warm (along with the high-octane brews, of course). We’ve got  the beer list so far, and it includes fun brews like Alameda Vintage Papa Noel’s Special Reserve, Burnside White Out Arctic Ale, North American Figgy Pudding, Labrador Milk and Cookies and many more. On Sunday, there’s a special Beer Brunch taking place from 11 AM–1 PM in the upstairs Sky Bar tent, featuring pastries, cured meats, cheeses and exclusive beers. Special $65 tickets are required, and you must bring your printed ticket for entry. Additional events taking place will include meet the brewer happenings, a root beer garden, beer pairings (with cupcakes and cheese!) and a charity coat and bag check that benefits the Children’s Cancer Association. Also expect plenty of food vendors on site.

The Holiday Ale Festival runs from noon–10 PM on Wednesday, 11 AM–10 PM Thursday–Friday and 11 AM–5 PM Sunday. Advance tickets are $30 each, and include a festival mug, 12 beer tickets and entry for all five days of the fest. Spring for the $65 VIP tickets to score access to special VIP beer lines, plus 28 beer tickets and a bottle of water. Designated driver tickets are available for $5 each, and include water and Crater Lake root beer.
