Great American Beer Festival Medal Winners in Portland
Over the weekend, the Brewers Association held its 30th Great American Beer Festival, bringing tens of thousands of craft beer lovers to Denver for a three-day tasting extravaganza. In addition to drinkers who came to have fun, a panel of professional beer judges came to the city and spent a week judging hundreds of entries in the annual beer competition.
When it was first held, in 1987, the competition had entries in just a dozen categories — this year there were 84, broken down further into 135 sub-genres. Winners were announced on Saturday morning, and there were quite a few local winners.
Golds were scored by Burnside Brewing for Sweet Heat, in the Herb and Spice Beer category; Rogue Ales for Hazelnut Brown Nectar in the Specialty Beer section; and Laurelwood Brewing for Organic Deranger Imperial Red Ale in the Imperial Red Ale group.
Silvers went to Breakside Brewery for Breakside Session Brown (English-Style Mild Ale); The Commons for Flemish Kiss (American-Style Brett Ale); and Columbia River Brewing for Stumbler’s Stout (Oatmeal Stout).
Bronze medals were awarded to Hopworks for Organic Hopworks Kellerbier (Kellerbier or Zwickelbier); Laurelwood for Mother Lode Golden Ale (English-Style Summer Ale) and Harvester Brewing for Scotch Ale, in the eponymous category.
That’s not even mentioning all the other Oregon winners, from Bend, Hood River and other brewing strongholds. Check out a full list of this year’s winners (and past winners) here, and let us know, do you agree with the judges’ decisions? Who would you have picked to win?
