Warm Up at Portland's Coziest Bars with Fireplaces
Multnomah Whisk{e}y Library
The Library isn’t all that hard to get into if you don’t go on a weekend night. During the week and right after opening at 4 PM you can sneak ahead and grab a seat relatively easily. For optimum hibernal comfort, try and snag a spot by the roaring fireplace, then grab a smoky scotch or warming bourbon and let the heat return to your bones. (1124 SW Alder St.; 503-954-1381)
Sapphire Hotel
One of Portland’s most romantic bars, The Sapphire Hotel has been warming up diners for the better part of the century with its mini wood-fired heater. The lush wood, carpeting, and warm lightning help make it even cozier. It’s a great place to grab some small plates and a cocktail on a date, or out with a few friends. (5008 SE Hawthorne Blvd.; 503-384-2347)
Lucky Devil Lounge
LDL is a fun, cozy spot even for those that aren’t huge fans of strip clubs. The gas fireplace inside is flanked by couches, and, outside, the patio offers a covered fire-pit. The vivid, lush red interior of the bar just adds to the warm feeling, as do the friendly and talented dancers. (633 SE Powell Blvd.; 503-206-7350)
Binks
A more casual spot, this Alberta arts watering hole features beer, wine, cocktails, pizza, and salads. In the summer the garage door is thrown wide for patio drinking, but in the winter months it’s better served hunkering around the fireplace in between games of pool. (2715 Northeast Alberta St.; 503-493-4430)
The Rookery
Raven and Rose’s upstairs cocktail bar is a swanky, Irish-inspired bar full of tufted leather, with a pool table to one side and a fireplace dominating the center. It’s on the extravagant (and pricey) side, but the gorgeously crafted drinks and comfortable environment are worth the occasional splurge, especially when the weather gets nippy. (1331 SW Broadway; 503-222-7673)
Jackknife Bar
While it’s a spacious bar with vaulted ceilings and cold marble, Jackknife manages to be a warm and cozy spot with its dual fireplaces in the front, surrounded by chairs, low tables, and couches. The seats are hotly contested in the winter months, but if you get there early you can claim a seat for the evening. (614 SW 11th Ave.; 503-384-2347)
The Fireside
It’s right there in the name; the fireside has a round fireplace in the bar area, and a fire-pit in the main dining room, so you’ll be cozy no matter where you are. You’ll definitely want to place an order for s’mores, especially with the suggested Tawny Port pairing, for that full “cuddling up next to a campfire” feeling. (801 NW 23rd Ave.; 503-477-9505)
The Chapel Pub
One of McMenamin’s many beautifully renovated and maintained locations, The Chapel Pub used to be the Little Chapel of the Chimes, developed in 1932. The old brick walls and shining hardwood, indicative of a McMenamin’s venture, house a crackling fireplace and a tall Round Oak wood stove. Grab one of McMenamin’s house ales or a whiskey and cozy up next to either of them. (430 N Killingsworth Ave.; 503-286-0372)
The Doug Fir
A great music venue, hotel bar, and all around hip restaurant and bar, the Doug Fir has a number of tucked away rooms. One beaded-curtained spot is the perfect place for a small group to huddle around the fireplace. Or you can just go downstairs for a show and let the body heat of hundreds of others warm you up. (830 East Burnside St.; 503-231-9663)
