Here's Where You Should Go for National Tequila Day in Portland
Tequila, that Mexican agave spirit that has so long been associated with college bars and poor decisions, has been seeing an elevation recently. Even casual consumers are realizing that tequila can be as “craft” as any high-end scotch or brandy, and tequila bars are becoming popular for more than just a cheap buzz. National Tequila Day, observed on Monday, July 24, is a great way for us to celebrate the art coming from our southern neighbor, and here are the best places to do so in Portland. Let us know where you’ll be sipping agave at our Facebook or Twitter.
The Matador
It’s a large chain, corporate feeling restaurant, yes. But the two Portland locations follow through on the restaurant’s goal of “the most diverse selection of tequilas anywhere.” Both the NW and East Side locations have stellar tequila lists, helpfully organized along styles and flavor profiles so you always know what you’re getting. For a full tasting experience, try one of the flights of three tequilas, ranging from $18 to $120. (1438 NW 23rd Ave.; 503-228-2855 & 2424 E Burnside St.; 503-719-5757)
Bit House Saloon prides itself on a substantial list of spirits, including an impressive array of tequila and mezcal. Often you’ll be able to find a hand-selected single barrel, perfect for an old fashioned or just sipping neat. It’s not a Mexican restaurant, but with the selection, it might as well be one. Plus, it’s open until 2:30 AM, so you can technically get started on the holiday after midnight on Sunday. (727 SE Grand Ave.; 954-3913)
The Multnomah Whisk{e}y Library
Yes, it’s obviously known for its unparalleled selection of whiskey, but the Library boasts a solid selection of a variety of spirits, including the agave ones from south of the border. If you’ve never had a tequila old-fashioned before, this is definitely the place to try it. What better time than on National Tequila Day? The fact that it’s on a Monday means you can actually get into the Library without an hour wait. (1124 SW Alder St.; 503-954-1381)
Mi Mero Mole
Sadly, the SE Division location of Mi Mero Mole shuttered earlier this year, but the downtown location with its full bar still thrives. Mi Mero Mole offers one of the best agave menus in town, due in part to some close relationships with Mexican distillers. Try any of them neat, or try some of the great margaritas offered. MMM has celebrated National Tequila day every year for the past few years, so we’re expecting some great deals on the 24th. (32 NW 5th Ave.; 971-266-8575)
Verde Cocina
Mexican cuisine made with Pacific Northwest ingredients and style, Verde Cocina has multiple locations across town, and even at the PSU Farmer’s Market (though you won’t find tequila there). At the brick and mortar spots you can find a great line up of tequilas, as well as creative, northwest inspired margaritas and cocktails. (Multiple locations)
The Goose
A Southwestern restaurant in Portland’s southeast, The Goose specializes in tequila, mezcal, margaritas, and agave based cocktails. Try a mezcal manhattan, or a tequila mule, or just one of the tequila flights, including a rotating daily one. The restaurant also carries a nice selection of Mexican beers to use as a tequila back, if you like. (2725 SE Ankeny St.; 503-235-2222)
La Taq
La Taq is the “Very Good Tex-Mex Bar” from Podnah’s Pit’s Rodney Muirhead. It actually sits right next door to the BBQ joint, serving up tacos, enchiladas, and, of course, 30+ different tequilas. Get a margarita and some enchiladas made with Podnah’s delicious, smokey brisket for a delicious multi-cultural culinary experience. (1625 NE Killingsworth St.; 971-888-5687)
