Where to Find the Best Tacos in Portland
KOI Fusion
KOI (Korean Oregon Fusion) began as a mobile food cart chain and has since opened a series of brick and mortars. Short rib or bulgogi beef and kimchi are far from traditional, but you won’t mind that much when you’re eating it. The burritos, rice bowls and quesadillas are also excellent too. La Bonita
This traditional family-owned Mexican joint stands out on the increasingly gentrified Alberta Street. It’s casual, affordable and open for breakfast at 10 AM every day. La Bonita is a classic. When they have shrimp tacos, get them. (2839 NE Alberta St.; 503-281-3662)
Por Que No?
Arguably the most popular taco spot in the city, Por Que No has two locations, one in SE and one on North Mississippi. Both serve up the same excellent quality tacos and margaritas, but the other food and drink options aren’t to be missed either. The Bryan’s Bowl, with choice of meat or veggies, beans, rice, salsa, guacamole, queso fresco, crema, cilantro and your choice of tortillas or chips for only $8, is an exceptional and delicious deal. (3524 N Mississippi Ave.; 503-467-4149 & 4635 SE Hawthorne Blvd.; 503-954-3138)
Robo Taco
Robo Taco is a bit of a hole in the wall, as the best taco shops usually are, and caters especially to the bar scene in SE. Open until 3:30 AM on the weekends, there is usually a riotous crowd buying tacos, burritos and more than a few extra drinks to finish off the night. Tacos are only $2.25, and the al pastor, with grilled pork and pineapple, is the best; try it in a burrito if you are especially hungry. (607 SE Morrison St.; 503-232-3707)
Taqueria Nueve
Taqueria Nueve serves more-or-less authentic, definitely well-made tacos in a more formal restaurant setting; it is the only place on this list with full table service. Perhaps because of this, tacos are a little on the pricier side. Still, it’s a great destination for a date night or happy hour when you can score reduced price margaritas and tacos.
