Libations and Laughs - What to Drink at Portland's Comedy Showcases
Despite the constant threat of Portland's comedic talent fleeing to Los Angeles, the Rose City's comedy scene continues to grow and prosper. With open mic nights and comedy showcases happening each night of the week, occurring everywhere from dimly lit dives to longtime music venues, it's easy to pair laughs with libations. While not every cocktail menu and tap list is created equal, there's no need to spend the evening drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon with a lime.
Control Yourself: A Showcase of Funny at Alberta Street Pub
Every first and third Sunday of the month, comedian JoAnn Schinderle takes the stage at the Alberta Street Pub to win crowds over with her self-described “pervy charm.” The list of talent varies from show to show, but Alberta Street Pub's cocktail list is a permanent collection of classic cocktails with housemade ingredients. Try the Moscow or Kentucky Mule which combines Tito's vodka or Maker's Mark with homemade ginger ale served in the typical frosty copper mug. Or for something with an even greater bite, order the Chupacabra with house-roasted serrano tequila, lime, agave, Pacifico float and a celery salted rim. (1036 NE Alberta St.; 503-284-7665)
Funny Humans Versus the Wheel at Bar of the Gods
Across town, comedians David Mascorro and Adam Pasi host Funny Humans Versus the Wheel every Sunday at Hawthorne's premier dive, Bar of the Gods. Inside, a laid-back atmosphere, both embodied by the neighborhood bar and the casual nature of the comedy show itself, is echoed by Bar of the Gods six-beer tap list. At one end, Portland-staple Pabst Blue Ribbon, and at the other, an IPA from Everybody's Brewing Company out of White Salmon, Wash. – the bar's best-selling beer and the same one that's been on tap for years. Various Shows at Helium Comedy Club
National acts such as Margaret Cho and Sinbad hit Helium Comedy Club throughout the year to make folks laugh, but each Tuesday at 8 PM, Helium hosts an open mic night featuring roughly 20 comics. Admission is free, but there's a two-item minimum, so start with the club's cocktail list. In particular, sip on the Red Velvet Manhattan that stirs up Bulleit Bourbon, black raspberry liqueur and sweet vermouth before moving on to the French 75, which combines Portland-based New Deal Distillery's gin with lemon juice, simple syrup and Champagne. Early, Early Comedy Show at Kelly's Olympian
Also on Sunday, the Early, Early Comedy Show runs from 4 to 6 PM and features a number of local comics working their open mic skills on the early afternoon downtown crowd that gathers at this Portland institution. Lee Aulson and Talon Bronson host Bunker Sessions, an additional open mic event that occurs every Monday evening. At Kelly's, the monthly rotating tap list is king. Brews from Portland favorites, including Breakside Brewing, Alameda Brewing and Ecliptic Brewing, are known to make frequent appearances on draught. (426 SW Washington St.; 503-228-3669)
