Six Beers to Look Forward to at the Portland Fruit Beer Festival, June 8-9
The third annual Portland Fruit Beer Festival will feature over 40 beers from more than 25 participating breweries, ensuring that even those wary of fruit beers will find something crave-worthy.
From ciders to sours to wits, the beer list is more diverse than previous years and brings the fruity flavor combinations to the streets, more than any festival of its kind. Try one of these inventive sips this weekend — the festival runs Saturday–Sunday, June 8–9, at East Burnside. What will you find? Check out our preview of six beers to try and then score $20 tickets ($28 for VIP) here.
Pub-o-matic Tiger Tonic - Passionfruit IPA by Hopworks Urban Brewery
Hoppy and fruity
This 20-barrel collaboration with Automatic Brewing of San Diego is a marriage of Belgian IPA, wit and fruit beer. With a low ABV of 5.3%, the hoppiness is subdued and balanced by acidity from the passion fruit. The combination of passion fruit, mango and pineapple — hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Galaxy and Citra hops — makes for a brew both hop lovers and fruit beer enthusiasts will enjoy
Ivill Krushu by Burnisde Brewing Co.
Dark porter with hints of oak and blueberry
A Baltic porter was aged in rum barrels with blueberries, golden figs, mission figs and dates, and it turned out well. The thinner mouthfeel and added carbonation make this fruity porter a winning pick for hot summer days (8.5% ABV).
Rhubarbarian by 2 Towns Ciderhouse
Amped up cider
A hundred barrels and 2.5 tons of rhubarb later and Portland has another “Damn Fine Cider.” A perfect blend of acid and sugar, it’s tart with a side of that “cider funk” Portlanders love so much (6.9% ABV).
Alamosa by Alameda Brewing
Citrusy beer-based mixed drink
Alamosa falls somewhere between a beer-mosa and a radler made from oranges. With an ABV comparable to Budweiser (4.8%) but so much classier, sample the Alamosa early on, as a light liquid breakfast.
Cherry Wheat by Lompoc Brewing
Tart cherry, wheat and oak
Take wheat ale brewed back in 2011 and combine it with 200 pounds of sour cherries and you’ll get this Cherry Wheat, but only it ages in Maryhill Winery port barrels for two months. The perfect combination of tart, sour and oak (5.5% ABV).
Bier Royale by Commons Brewery
Champagne cocktail
This beer disguised as a cocktail was named after the Kir Royale. Black currant puree gives this sour spelt-based beer a natural acidity and noteworthy carbonation brings out the not-too-boozy berry flavor (5.5% ABV).
